Isaiah 66:12 – Peace like a river: The image is of a steadily rushing river, never lacking supply, without interruption and spreading out widely. Thus God will bring shalom – peace, security, abundant prosperity, wholeness, and welfare. The Gentiles will come like an overflowing stream (Isa. 9:7; 48:18; 52:7; 54:13; 57:19; 60:17). The river is a symbol of the overflowing presence of God (Isa 33:21 - 21 But there the majestic LORD will be for us A place of broad rivers and streams, In which no galley with oars will sail, Nor majestic ships pass by 22 (For the LORD is our Judge, The LORD is our Lawgiver, The LORD is our King; He will save us. cf.; Isa 41:18; 43:19). Jesus spoke about this powerful peace and provision of His presence in John 7:38: He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (Jer 17:8; Psalm 1 ) But there is more to this River. We see it first in Eden (Gen 2:10), but it reappears in Revelation 22:1-2: And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
