Psalm 139 - Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Forty years ago this month, on January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court issued a decision in Roe v. Wade, finding that a “right to privacy” it had earlier discovered in the Constitution was “broad enough to encompass” a right to abortion adopting a trimester scheme of pregnancy. Issued on the same day, Doe v. Bolton defined “health” to mean “all factors” that affect the woman, including “physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age.” 

Since that ruling, there have over 53 million abortions, the population of a mid-sized country. It would rank 24^th among national populations, a number greater than the nations of South Africa, South Korea, or Spain.[1] For those born since 1973, for every ten people born, three more have been aborted. There are more than 140,000 second and third trimester abortions each year. Every year more American children die from abortions than have died from every war in which America has participated combined.

On Dec. 26^th, 2012, US Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor denied Hobby Lobby’s application for an emergency injunction protecting them from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s HHS Mandate on abortion-inducing drugs (and fines of $1.3 million per day). Hobby Lobby has decided to defy the federal government to remain true to their religious beliefs, at enormous risk and financial cost. Hobby Lobby sued the federal government for violating their Christian owners' religious freedom.[2]

Hobby Lobby is wholly owned and controlled by the Green family, who are evangelical Christians. The Greens are committed to running their business in accordance with their Christian faith, believing that God wants them to conduct their professional business in accordance with the family’s understanding of the Bible. Hobby Lobby’s mission statement includes, “Honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company … consistent with Biblical principles.”  

David Green, CEO and founder of Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., responded to the denial of request with this statement: “When my family and I started our company 40 years ago, we were working out of a garage on a $600 bank loan, assembling miniature picture frames. Our first retail store wasn't much bigger than most people's living rooms, but we had faith that we would succeed if we lived and worked according to God's word. From there, Hobby Lobby has become one of the nation's largest arts and crafts retailers, with more than 500 locations in 41 states.

“Our children grew up into fine business leaders, and today we run Hobby Lobby together, as a family. We're Christians, and we run our business on Christian principles. I've always said that the first two goals of our business are (1) to run our business in harmony with God's laws, and (2) to focus on people more than money. And that's what we've tried to do. We close early so our employees can see their families at night. We keep our stores closed on Sundays, one of the week's biggest shopping days , so that our workers and their families can enjoy a day of rest. We believe that it is by God's grace that Hobby Lobby has endured, and he has blessed us and our employees. We've not only added jobs in a weak economy, we've raised wages for the past four years in a row. Our full-time employees start at 80% above minimum wage.

“But now, our government threatens to change all of that. A new government healthcare mandate says that our family business must provide what I believe are abortion-causing drugs as part of our health insurance. Being Christians, we don't pay for drugs that might cause abortions. Which means that we don't cover emergency contraception, the morning-after pill or the week-after pill. We believe doing so might end a life after the moment of conception, something that is contrary to our most important beliefs. It goes against the Biblical principles on which we have run this company since day one. If we refuse to comply, we could face $1.3 million per day in government fines. Our government threatens to fine job creators in a bad economy. Our government threatens to fine a company that's raised wages four years running. Our government threatens to fine a family for running its business according to its beliefs. It's not right. I know people will say we ought to follow the rules; that it's the same for everybody. But that's not true. The government has exempted thousands of companies from this mandate, for reasons of convenience or cost. But it won't exempt them for reasons of religious belief.

“So, Hobby Lobby — and my family — are forced to make a choice. With great reluctance, we filed a lawsuit, asking a federal court to stop this mandate before it hurts our business. We don't like to go running into court, but we no longer have a choice. We believe people are more important than the bottom line and that honoring God is more important than turning a profit. My family has lived the American dream. We want to continue growing our company and providing great jobs for thousands of employees, but the government is going to make that much more difficult. The government is forcing us to choose between following our faith and following the law. I say that's a choice no American — and no American business — should have to make.”

Hobby Lobby will now continue their lawsuit in the Tenth Circuit, but they are not alone. More than 110 individuals in 43 separate cases — representing hospitals, universities, diocese, businesses and schools — are challenging the HHS mandate.[3]

According to the Reese Chronological Bible, Psalm 139 is set in the year 1016 B.C., after the David’s battles with the Philistines at Baal-Perazim and in the mulberry trees (2 Sam 5:19-25; 1 Chron 14:10-17) about the time the Ark of the Covenant was brought to Jerusalem (1 Chron 13:1-8; 2 Sam 6:1-5).

We look into an uncertain year. What do we do? The book of Joshua has some answers, specifically in chapters 3 and 4 where the children of Israel cross over the Jordan River to the Promised Land. Let’s look at this passage today.

Abortionist says he kills "ugly black babies"

On July 26, 2012, in a video published by opersvamerica, a conversation got heated when a few pro-life folks with Operation Save America met Charlotte, NC, abortionist Dr. Ashutosh Ron Virmani. As this conversation escalated, Dr. Virmani claimed he is lessening the burden on tax payers by killing unborn babies. He admitted to destroying babies, not a blob of tissue or a fetus, or as he described them, "ugly black babies." Take a look.

   

"Let me see one of you adopt one of those ugly black babies," Abortionist Ashutosh Ron Virmani said. 

The black community should be outraged because Ashutosh Virmani is a brazen racist and his statement supports what we already know of the billion dollar abortion industry--black babies are targeted because they are seen as poor, worthless and maybe even "ugly."

Numbers 35:30-34 - Is Capital Punishment Biblical?

Opening thought:

This past Wednesday night, Georgia inmate Troy Davis was executed for the 1989 murder of Mark MacPhail, an off-duty Savannah police officer. The execution was about four hours later than initially scheduled, because prison officials waited for a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Davis' request for a stay. After 10 p.m. ET, the Supreme Court, in a brief order, rejected Davis' request. His supporters had sought to prevent the execution, saying seven of the nine witnesses against him have recanted or contradicted their testimony. Davis died at 11:08 p.m. ET, according to a prison official.[1]

While cameras were focused on Georgia, the state of Texas quietly executed Lawrence Russell Brewer, a white supremacist who killed a black man in 1998 by dragging him behind his pickup truck. Brewer was the first of two to be put to death for the crime, while a third man received a life sentence. He spoke no last words, and tears formed in his eyes as he died, according to the Houston Chronicle. Brewer’s execution came after the Supreme Court issued stays to halt Texas’s two previous scheduled executions.[2]

Then on Thursday, a man convicted of the 1994 execution-style shooting of a store clerk in Alabama was put to death on Thursday by lethal injection in the third U.S. execution carried out this week. Derrick O'Neal Mason killed 25-year-old Angela Cagle during the attempted robbery of a convenience store in Huntsville, Alabama. Authorities said he forced Cagle to strip naked and shot her twice in the face at close range. Mason, 37, was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m. local time. Mason had spent 16 years on death row. He was the fifth inmate executed in Alabama this year, and the 36th in the United States in 2011.

"We'll miss Angie until we see her in heaven," her family said in a written statement. "We are grateful for the prayers and support we have received in these 17-1/2 years in dealing with having her ripped from our lives but never from our hearts."[3]

Usually I have my preaching calendar planned several weeks ahead. For example, I know with some certainty what I will be preaching through the end of January. It is sometimes strange how I can plan well ahead that preaching calendar, and the topic that I had planned weeks ago is current in the culture when it comes time to preach it. That happened this week on the question, “Is Capital Punishment Biblical?” from Numbers 35. Let’s turn to that chapter in the Old Testament and let me give you some background on the passage.

Contextual Notes:

As Moses continues laying down principles for the occupation of the Promised Land, he has spoken about driving out the Canaanites (Num 33:50-56), defined the boundaries of Canaan (Num 34:1-15), and selected men to supervise the land distribution (Num 34:16-29). Now in chapter 35, Moses sets aside 48 towns for the Levites within the other tribes’ territories, and they were to be scattered among all the tribes so that they would know the Torah of the Lord (Num 35:1-8). He establishes six cities of refuge, all within a day’s walk for every Israelite to find sanctuary (Num 35:9-15), and he sets principles for dealing with homicide, defining murder (Num 35:16-21) and accidental killing (Num 35:22-29), so that the Promised Land will not be defiled with blood (Num 35:30-34). This chapter thus becomes a key to understanding the Scripture’s outlook on murder and capital punishment.

Nothing but the Blood of Jesus

Revelation 12:11

From the book of Deuteronomy we hear the truth, “The life is in the blood” (Deut. 12:23). Across the centuries of the church, we have held precious the songs about the Blood of Jesus. The Blood of Jesus stands as evidence of how much we are loved. When we truly come to grips with our unworthiness to take the sinless Sacrifice of our Lord as our atonement, we are overcome as we sing with the hymn writer, “O precious is the flow that makes me white as snow.”

What His Blood Does

• By His Blood Jesus atoned for my sin (Lev 17:11; Rom 3:25; 1 John 4:10)

• By His Blood, I am justified, acquitted of sin and guilt, and exonerated of God’s wrath and judgment (Rom 5:9)

• By His Blood I am forgiven once for all. My guilt is legally remitted (Heb 9:22, 25)

• By His Blood even our sins committed in ignorance are availed (Heb 9:7)

• By His Blood I am redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to me from my forefathers (1 Peter 1:18-19)

• By His Blood sprinkled in the Most Holy Place, atonement is made for us (Lev 16:27)

• By His Blood our redemption and forgiveness were purchased from sin and death by God’s grace, and I forever belong to Him (Eph 1:7; 2:13; Matt 26:28; Col 1:14; Rev 5:9; Acts 20:28)

• By His Blood we have a testimony that the death angel has passed over us (Exod. 12:13, 23)

• By His Blood we have abundant grace and peace  through its cleansing and sanctifying work (1 Peter 1:2; Heb 13:12)

• By His Blood I now have full salvation and reconciliation with joy in Him (Rom 5:10-11)

• By His Blood we are reconciled to God as all His righteous requirements of us are satisfied (Col 1:20)

• By His Blood I have right standing before God as a priest in His Kingdom (1 John 1:7; Rev 1:5-6; 7:14)

• By His Blood we have an unassailable position in our salvation (1 Cor.10:16; John 10:28-29)

• By His Blood I stand clean before God and thankful for his irrevocable covenant (Heb 9:14-15, 24; Luke 22:20; 1 Cor. 11:25)

• By His Blood the eternal covenant of Jesus binds to me all the transforming power and pleasure of God (Heb 13:20-21)

• By His Blood we have confidence to enter in and draw near to God in full assurance that there is no ground of accusation (Heb. 10:19-22; Eph 2:13)

• By His Blood we have overcoming power over the enemy, and it prevails over the gates of hell (Rev 12:11; Matt 16:18)

• By His Blood we have power over the sins, habits, and hurts of this life (Zech 9:11-12)

• By His Blood Jesus destroyed the works of the devil, and it stands effective between me and the enemy (Heb 2:14)

• By His Blood we celebrate our Redeemer (Matt. 26:28)

Overcome with accusations? Stand on Heb. 9:14; Rev. 12:10-11. Overwhelmed at the warfare? Pray Rev 12:11; 19:11-16. Overtaken by sin and temptation? Run to Psalm 40:12-13; 1 John 1:9. Find your power and your safety in the Blood of the Lamb! It is the confession of overcomers (Rev. 12:11).

Wesley Duewel, the writer on prayer, says the Blood is “the greatest, most powerful, most unanswerable plea of all. There is no more prevailing argument we can bring before God than the sufferings, blood, and death of His Son. We have no merit of our own. We do not prevail in prayer by techniques or past experience. It is only through the blood of Jesus."

Pray till you have assurance of God’s will. Pray till you have been given by the Spirit a vision of what God longs to do, needs to do, wants to do. Pray till you are gripped by the authority of the name of Jesus. Then [call on the covenantal power of] the blood of Jesus. Call on them [the Name and the Blood], stake your all on them, and use them to the glory of God and the routing of Satan.” [1]

Read the truth above. Pray the truths above. Declare the freedom of the truth above.

“There is power, power, wonder-working power in the precious blood of the Lamb.”

Planned Parenthood can't fool Mississippi voters

Planned Parenthood must think voters in Mississippi are fools, but one man ended up with some Mississippi Mud on his face this past Wednesday. 

Rev. Vincent Lachina spoke to a crowd of Mississippi voters during a Mississippi Secretary of State's Personhood Amendment Hearing.  

Lachina spoke against Mississippi's Personhood Amendment, saying he is an ordained Southern Baptist pastor who is both "prolife and prochoice." Addressing the crowd in a clerical collar, the Mississippians listened intently as Lachina shared that he grew up in Jackson and had a Mississippi heritage. Lachina boldly preached an ideology of choice, calling for a "no" vote on prolife Amendment 26.

Unfortunately, Lachina left out some critical details. Lachina failed to mention that he is also the Washington State Chaplain at Planned Parenthood Federation of America.  

Jacob Dawson of the American Family Association was sitting in the audience and decided to do a Google search of Lachina, having never heard of a Southern Baptist preacher from Mississippi by that name -- much less a pro-choice, clerical collar-wearing Southern Baptist preacher. Dawson stood before the crowd and stated, "A quick Google search reveals a January 2006 article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer stating that Mr. Lachina is from Seattle, and is a chaplain for Planned Parenthood."

The crowd was stunned, and many were outraged at the misrepresentation and deception of Planned Parenthood. That wasn't all. A little more googling found this 2007 statement by Mr. Lachina, "We gay men don't need to worry about what the Republicans, the Religious Right, or homophobes will do to us." (Vincent Lachina, "The Good Boy," The Advocate, 1-30-2007).  

According to the Planned Parenthood Votes! Northwest website, Rev. Lachina is actually a native of Birmingham, Alabama. Well, it did. It seems they took down his image, but an image.google.com search gives the image text on the right. His facebook page is here.

"Nationwide, we have seen Planned Parenthood's repeated attempts to deceive the public. These are just the kind of underhanded tactics we have come to expect from Planned Parenthood," explained Keith Mason, President of Personhood USA. "It appears that Planned Parenthood flew a man from Washington to Mississippi, put him in a clerical collar, and asked him to appeal to the voters with deep Southern Baptist roots. It's just wrong. His attempts to dissuade voters from voting for Amendment 26 will not be successful. Yes on 26 is an honest campaign for a pro-life measure. No posturing or dress-up is necessary to see that all human beings are people, and that all people have a right to life."

Genesis 1:26-28; 2:20-25 - God's Institution of the Family

Brady Bunch

Opening thought: 

Families are important. In family we learn our first ideas. In family we build our first foundation about reality and life In family we first understand authority and how to get along together. I grew up in a family with one Dad and one Mom all my life, a family that these days is in the minority. Amanda grew up in what is called a blended family – kind of like the Brady Bunch. Her mother had two girls and her father had three girls and they had a son after marrying.

Today we begin a new series of studies on our world and God’s vision for it. The first three sermons will set the playing field with the three things God has instituted in our world: the family, the government, and the church. Then we will take several weeks to look at what the Bible teaches about several current issues involving these three institutions of God in more depth. My goal is for us to learn and grow in basic areas of Biblical worldview in such a way that you can see how it applies to your life and the lives of those you love and work with.

Today we will begin with the first institution on which the other two, government and church, are built. We will begin with God’s institution of the family.

Planned Parenthood helping traffickers in Virginia

Earlier I blogged about the Planned Parenthood clinic manager in New Jersey, Amy Woodruff, who assisted two people posing as sex traffickers of underage girls, domestic and foreign, in violation of federal law. The story was picked up by several major new outlets. Planned Parenthood claimed it was a hoax, but Amy Woodruff was fired February 1, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie vetoed a bill funding Planned Parenthood. YouTube notified Live Action that the video would be taken down from their site at 7pm February 13, 2011, but Thomas More Society lawyers representing Live Action who did the videos, sent a letter demanding the videos be reposted.

Now there is a new video with the same setup from the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Richmond, VA, and the counselor has no problem on the secret camera ignoring federal law against human trafficking and contributing to the victimization of underage girls.

It is past time to defund Planned Parenthood of US taxpayer dollars. If they want to operate, it is a free country, and their liberal supporters can fund them themselves until we can find a way to make abortion a criminal act once again.

Aiding Traffickers at Planned Parenthood

Under Federal law, any underage person doing commercial prostitution is automatically a victim of severe human trafficking and comes under protection. 

In the last few years, Planned Parenthood has been exposed for all kinds of alleged criminal activity--everything from covering up statutory rape and sexual abuse to accepting donations for race-based abortions. In an explosive new undercover video by Lila Rose, it looks like Planned Parenthood has expanded its broad range of services. According to Amy Woodruff, a clinic manager in New Jersey, the organization that rakes in more than $363 million taxpayer dollars a year is more than willing to help a local pimp hide a ring of child prostitutes. Just two weeks ago, Woodruff was caught on tape advising him how he could make his underage girls look "as legit as possible."

The actor admits up front that he's involved in "sex work" with 14- and 15-year-old children, some of whom, he confesses, were brought in "outta the country." Without missing a beat, Woodruff says, "I'm assuming most of them are coming here illegally, right?" and says her clinic won't ask for social security numbers. Knowing that he's bringing the girls to the U.S. for what many would consider sex trafficking, she tells him how to prep his girls to lie about their age. "So long as they just...say, 'Oh, she's fifteen, sixteen...' then we just play stup[id]." When he asks about abortion, Woodruff reaches under her desk, says, "You never got this from me," and explains where his youngest prostitutes can go--no questions asked. "...[S]o many parents... [are] like, 'Oh, but she's a minor.' Ok. Yeah, so? ...She's still entitled to care without mom knowin' what the **** is going on." Later, she suggests that these girls can still make money after an abortion by performing sex acts from the "waist up." Or, she says, "just be that 'extra action walking by' to advertise sex to potential clients." At the end, the pimp offers Woodruff a deal for keeping their abortion arrangement a secret--something she agrees to try.

This is the abortion industry.
