"We feel that our cause is just and holy; we protest solemnly in the face of mankind that we desire peace at any sacrifice save that of honour and independence; we ask no conquest, no aggrandizement, no concession of any kind from the States with which we were lately confederated; all we ask is to be let alone; that those who never held power over us shall not now attempt our subjugation by arms." President Jefferson Davis - 29 April 1861
Davis served
- in the U.S. House of Representatives,
- the Mexican War,
- twice in the U.S. Senate,
- as the 23rd United States Secretary of War under Franklin Pierce, and
- President of the Confederate States of America.

Gene: I was born at Fort Monroe adjacent to Hampton Roads. It is one of the only surviving coastal artillery forts such as Fort Sumter and Fort Caswell with an active army unit which is soon to change and the historic old fort is due to be closed and divided among the real estate moguls. It is a grand day trip three hours east on US 58 and I 64. You may visit the Davis cell in the Casemate Museum and see the cell just as Davis left it. pcox
